The Niskayuna Reformed Church has an immediate opening for a Director of Handbells/Chimes, a key contributor to the music ministry of the Niskayuna Reformed Church, in partnership with the Director of Music, the other music staff, the Pastor, and the Worship Committee of Consistory.
Responsibilities of the position include managing and directing the Eendracht Bell Choir with 4.5 octaves of handbells. Rehearsals to be scheduled once per week from September to May. Performances are to be scheduled for 4 times per year during worship service. Additionally the Director may collaborate with other staff members to add individual or small ensembles (when appropriate and time permitting) for special services such as Christmas, etc., as well as even the possibility of church exchanges and performances at other venues.
The Director is responsible for creatively working to retain and promote membership in the Handbell choir. At the discretion of the Director, consideration may also be given to the development of a Kinder Klokken choir from the children of the congregation using 2 octaves of handbells, and possibly also a chimes choir with two octaves of chimes. Bells for such groups are available.
The candidate must demonstrate skill and experience playing with and directing handbell groups and must work collaboratively with the Director of Music Ministries and with the Music Committee on performance and rehearsal scheduling. Also included is responsibility for the custodial care of the handbell and chime instruments, their cases, tables, robes, gloves, mallets, sheet music cushions, coverings, lights, music stands, etc. and arrange for their maintenance as needed, as well as ensuring that no one other than the Choir members play or handle these instruments without permission.
